Poor Man's Swiss Steak Recipe

A classic poor man's Swiss steak recipe is hard to beat for a delicious and budget-friendly meal. This hearty and flavorful dish features inexpensive cuts of beef, such as round steak or chuck roast, that are tenderized and slow-cooked in a savory tomato-based sauce. The end result is a tasty and filling meal that won't break the bank.

To make a poor man's Swiss steak, begin by tenderizing your beef. This can be accomplished by pounding it with a meat tenderizer or by marinating it. It's time to cook the beef after it's been tenderized. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, heat a little oil and sear the beef on both sides until nicely browned.

Then, add your tomato-based sauce, which can be as simple or as complex as you like. A mixture of canned tomatoes, broth, and seasonings such as garlic and onion powder works well. You can also add diced vegetables such as onions, bell peppers, and carrots for flavor and nutrition.

Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to a low heat and let it simmer until the beef is tender and the sauce has thickened. Depending on the cut of beef, this can take anywhere from an hour to several hours.

When finished, the poor man's Swiss steak will be tender, flavorful, and satisfying. Serve it over mashed potatoes or noodles for a delicious and inexpensive meal that is sure to please. So, why not try this recipe? With this delicious poor man's Swiss steak, you'll get the most bang for your buck.

Instructions:

  1. Step 1: Mix ground beef, better than beef bouillon, 1/2 of the tomato purée, oatmeal, egg, and some black pepper together. Once combined well, form 6 flat round patties.
  2. Step 2: Heat your cast iron to a medium-high heat and fry the patties on each side. While frying, preheat your oven to 385F. Also, mince your onion and green chilies or drain your can of chilies. The chilies should not be spicy.
  3. Step 3: Once the meat has cooked, set it on a plate and out of the way. Add butter, chilies, and onion to the skillet and cook until soft and fragrant. Add flour and cook for 2-3 minutes, allowing the flour taste to cook out.
  4. Step 4: Once step 3 is done, add in the no salt beef broth and tomato paste. Add some black pepper and salt to taste. Once thickened, add in the heavy cream and mix again.
  5. Step 5: Add the patties back into the gravy and cover with the gravy. Place in the oven for 30 minutes.
  6. Step 6: Once cooked, allow to cool.
  7. Step 7: Serve with mashed potatoes and carrots!
